About
Windsor High School

Windsor High School (WHS) was founded in 1938 by Mrs. Enid Ranger-Jones (ERJ) of St. Mary, Jamaica. The school was first located in Windsor Castle, St. Mary, relocated to Lissant Road (Near Kingston College), and finally in 1945 to 43 South Camp Road, Kingston (opposite the Convent of Mercy Alpha Academy and beside Sabina Park).

ERJ, affectionately called ‘MaBest,’ operated the school with her husband, Darius Adolph Jones, an agricultural instructor whom she married in 1934. She was one of the first Jamaican women to have graduated from Howard University, and a picture of her dressed in full regalia of the times (hair perfectly coiffured, floor-length dress, and umbrella in tow) is published in famed alumni and former boarding school student and teacher at the school, the late Father Easton Lee’s book titled “From Behind the Counter.”

Enid Ranger was a teacher at Windsor Castle High School, but she disagreed with the school’s leaders over a lack of artistic programs in the curriculum. She started a school in Windsor Castle before moving the school to Kingston amid transportation issues to access the school. This is the origin of the name Windsor.

Death and Burial of Mrs. Ranger-Jones

Mrs. Ranger-Jones lived in Water Works before she retired, migrated to the USA, and was cared for by her niece Pearl Riley. She passed on in 1986, and her funeral was held at St. Andrew Parish Church. She was interred there, and the Reverend Spence officiated the service with Bishop DeSouza in attendance. Darius had predeceased her in 1968.

Principal Mrs. Beryl Williams

Principal Mrs. Beryl Williams assumed the administration of the school after Mrs. Ranger-Jones retired. Unfortunately, the school was destroyed by fire in the early 1970s. It was renamed Wilmar (in honor of Mrs. Williams) and relocated. The school ceased to exist on Mrs. Williams’ passing.

Special Thanks to Father Lee

for taking the time from his busy schedule to reminisce with me on our alma mater a few years before his passing. WHS will live forever in the hearts and memories of its alumni and others.
